History: 4976vw 64 years old female with a 3 month history of a slowly enlarging plaque on her shin. It was infected recently and improved after some penicillin. Thought she had an insect bite reaction intially. 3 biopsies For culture and histology DD Deep fungus, Atypical Mycobacterial infection

Description: Dermal Abscess

Comments: Sections show a biopsy of skin in which there is an abscess within the dermis. The abscess cavity contains purulent exudate. The abscess is lined by inflamed granulation tissue. The surrounding dermis is fibrotic and the overlying epidermis shows some reactive hyperplasia. No granulomas can be seen and there is no evidence of fungal or mycobacterial organisms.
